Cold Country Vines & Wines

Louise Swenson

This grape was selected by Elmer Swenson from a cross of E.S. 2-3-17 x Kay Gray. It was named after Elmer’s wife, Louise. Louise Swenson is a very cold-tolerant variety, reported cold-hardy to an amazing -40◦ F. The grapes have a naturally low sugar with only moderate acidity. Louise Swenson is used to make white wine, with a delicate aroma of honey and flowers. Due to its natural low sugar levels, wine made from Louise Swenson tends to be light-bodied, while fuller-bodied wines are often blended with Louise Swenson to make a more complete product. The dry white wine has a fruity nose with aromas of pears and banana. It is reminiscent of Chardonel, (a cross of the famed Chardonnay grape with the popular Seyval).
